A Quick Guide to Student Resumes
Before we get into how to make a good resume, you may be asking yourself...
Do I really need to know how to write a student resume?
The bad news is that you likely will not be able to escape resume writing for your whole life. The good news is that it isn’t as difficult as you may think.
So, what is a student resume?
A student resume is a brief overview of your background and achievements. This includes categories such as your:
Education
Honors & Awards
Activities/Clubs
Community/Volunteer Activities
Work Experience
Skills
Do I need a student resume for scholarships?
Some scholarship organizations may ask you to submit a resume along with your application. This helps them get an understanding of what you’ve accomplished as a student.
And while some scholarships won't require it, it may be helpful to create a resume so that you can quickly list your achievements for future applications.
How do I format it?
The best thing to do is start with a strong template. Google Docs has great resume templates that you can start with!
Here's an example of a professional resume template:
Once you have your template, the next mission is to just plug in your relevant experience! If you don’t have certain categories, just remove them and replace them with relevant information. (For example, if you don’t have any work experience, just replace that section with something like “skills”).
Any final tips?
With a basic resume, simplicity is key. Your resume should be a one-page document that concisely summarizes your achievements.
As far as aesthetics, avoid things like:
Multiple colors
Different fonts
Unnecessary graphics
Also, some resume templates you come across might include a spot to put a profile picture. Typically, it is best to avoid putting a picture of yourself on your resume.
